Had the pleasure of photographing Jack Carty for The Business Post Magazine. Jack a well-known professional rugby player who plays for Connacht and is also an Irish International. Have to say it was an absolute pleasure to meet jack he was generous and gracious with his time, my son Conor was with me helping to assist and he and Jack got on like a house on fire. Not that houses should be on fire. The assignment which was for the Business Post Magazine was more of a feature on Jack the man outside of rugby as opposed to a full on feature about him as a professional rugby player.
We arranged to meet in a park in Salthill and it was the usual gamble with the weather in this part of the world. With shoots of this nature you don’t have a lot of time you have to be conscious of the fact that a full time athlete has taken time out of their busy schedule that allied to the fact that you might get ten minutes where it might not rain. In fact Jack was so great just as we were about to start shooting it rained for a few minutes and we had to stand under some trees. All the while I’m there thinking here I have an Icon of Connacht Rugby huddled under a tree “I’m sure he would prefer to be some where else” my mind kept saying. But he didn’t say that in fact he was super patient.
It pays to be organised in these situations, I arrived a half hour before Jack’s allotted meet time and did a recce of the location, where I was going to shoot etc. So when the rain stopped I knew exactly what I was going to do and ensure that I wasn’t taking too much of jack’s time.
As always you never know what images will be used so it’s vital that you get a wide range of images. Uprights and horizontals, wide and tight with an eye on composition and light. Light in this case was going to be an issue, the light was dull and murky so flash was the order of the day. Flash balanced with the ambient light to great contrast and dimension for the images.
The shoot time in total was fifteen minutes which was very generous on Jack’s part as it was late in the day. The images were used in The Business Post Magazine. Thanks Jack for your patience and time and Conor (my son) for your assistance.
